Penang – Butterworth (12km) – Kepala Batas (11km) – Sungai Petani (20km) – Bedong (13km) – Merbok (13km) – Yan (14km) – Sg. Limau (12km) – Junction of Simpang Empat (13km) – Kuala Kedah (12km) = Total of 120km
Julita – First time cycling for long distance touring, a vegetarian taking no carbo but can riding on a ‘BIG FOOT’ without much complaints.
Miow Chin – The rich woman getting her new ‘husband’, the Scott MTB at KHS cost RM2700. First time joining for long distance touring but not new to Penang Hill cycling.
Chee Chung – The ‘Camman’ (Camera Man) along the way, having full touring gears like Mat Salleh.
Chong Wah – Due to the technical limitation (not fitness limitation), he pushed the bike on the hills. I guess his main purpose of joining this tour is to stock in the liquors, that’s why he carried the 60-litter backpack!
Rho Wen – Never new to touring but this time she is a bit out of patient in riding slow, she is either in front or missing herself of overshooting.
Hin Wai – The most ‘pro’ cyclist among us without his clip shoes in this trip. Luckily he brought his MTB not the road bike, else we wont see him along with us riding 20km/hr.
Me – First time touring with my Fuji bike, not a good touring bike, I had severe butt pain after the ride.
31.12.2006 Morning, Afternoon were fair
01.01.2007 Morning, Afternoon were hot
Participants from South (Rho Wen, Chong Wah, Chee Chung) and participants from Central (Hin Wai and I) traveled to North (Penang) by cars. Met participants (Miow Chin and Julita) at Penang near 9 pm, about 2 hours later than scheduled itinerary.
Back to Julita’s house at 11.30pm, get ready the gears and light off by 1am.
7.03 am Departed from Julita’s House to Penang jetty
7.25 am Arrived at jetty, waiting for ferry at motorcycle lane
7.35 am Boarded to ferry and departed for Butterworth
7.50 am Arrived at Butterworth
8.00 am Breakfast at Butterworth
8.30 am Departed for the journey, started with speed of 20 – 23 km/hr. Met the first greenly paddy field and stopped by for photo session.
On the way from Butterworth
10.15 am What a busy road, arrived at Sungai Petani after 43km, had a drinks stop
11.25 am Arrived at Bedong, 13 km from Sungai Petani
Riding in Meerbok, Gunung Jerai (The highest mountain in Kedah) ahead of us
12.15 pm Arrived at Merbok, 69km, met a group of male cyclists from Sungai Petani at one restaurant for lunch. Weather was fair, not too hot. It was a wonderful route from Merbok to Yan, we were surrounded by paddy fields, beach and Gunung Jerai (the highest mountain in Kedah). All the way was flat except this part, we all enjoyed climbing the 2 hills here and felt the sweat at this point of time.
2.00 pm Arrived at Yan after 83 km of cycled, took a short break then all the way to Kuala Kedah. Everybody seems like exhausted after climbing 2 hills, movement was slow, speed was around 19 – 20 km/hr.
2.57 pm Arrived at Sg. Limau, 25 km away from Kuala Kedah
Paddy fields surrounding us
3.59 pm Arrived at junction of Simpang Empat, it was 12 km more to the final destination
4.50 pm Finally, arrived at Kuala Kedah Terminal Ferry… Total distance from Penang is 120km.
5.15 pm Loaded the bikes and boarded to the ferry
7.00 pm Arrived at Langkawi Island, met Chee Chung’s ex-colleague, Sandra, then check-in to the Hotel Baron at Kuah, a dormitory cost RM20/pax.
9.00 pm Seafood dinner
12.00 am Happy New Year 2007!
Too bad that this day is Hari Raya Haji, we missed all the drinking fresh cool coconut juices :(
Lepak-lepak near by, went to Pantai Beringin and Eagle Square. We led by Sandra and started cycling to Ulu Melaka at 10 am, a scenic and silent route at north of Kuah, about 30 km through and flow from Kuah. 2pm was the shopping time before leaving Langkawi for Penang at 5.15pm. Reached Port Swettenham at 8.30 pm, wze all ‘crossed the finishing line’ (Julita’s house) at 10.30 pm… phew… the most challenging path is the last 15 km from Port Swettenham to Julita’s house.
The end of this touring trip indicates the start of next touring trip. Miow Chin and Julita who are the 1st time touring kaki have been addicted to touring by bike. Perhaps if we have more time in Langkawi or no butt pain, we can cycle more in Langkawi Island, and we will be able to feel the Ironman cycling route.
